What are Laser classifications and what exactly is their intended use?

Laser classifications are strictly safety and hazard ratings by the FDA and OSHA. It refers to the mean output of power of the laser and its potential for harm. It does not refer to effectiveness, efficacy or outcomes, only the potential of eye damage or burning of skin during use. Class 1 is the safest, Class IV is the most potentially hazardous.
